WWC Members Learn About the Program “Keep Prince William County Beautiful”

"Keep Prince William County Beautiful” was the speaker’s topic for the January WWC General Meeting. Mr. Rico Fleshman, Executive Director of the department, highlighted initiatives, including Adopt-a-Spot, Adopt-a-Shelter, Community Cleanups, Litter Surveying, Storm Drain Awareness, Educational Outreach, TREX Recycling, E-waste Recycling, Beautification, and a Pilot Compost Program. He outlined ways the public may actively participate in supporting the department's objectives, such as artists decorating bus shelters to discourage littering. Collaborations with community garden clubs and data center volunteers resulted in the planting of 90 trees and improvements to the Chinn Park Library Children’s Garden. WWC members learned the Club could propose a Woodbridge area project to Mr. Fleshman's department. If approved, he would seek funding for it. This offers an opportunity for members to contribute their time without the need for financial contributions from themselves or the Club, thereby encouraging greater community commitment to projects.

WWC Annual Holiday Luncheon and Festive Sing-Along

To celebrate the last club activity of 2023, WWC members gathered at Acclaim for their Annual Holiday Luncheon. The event featured a delightful buffet and delicious desserts to begin this special occasion.

After the meal, the season’s theme continued as members engaged in two games designed to test their recall of Christmas carol lyrics. To everyone's surprise, one member demonstrated an impressive knowledge of Christmas carol lyrics, getting the highest score in both games. She attributed her success to years of singing in a church choir. Another member revealed her musical expertise, winning a second prize for her knowledge.

As a fitting conclusion, attendees were treated to the lively tunes played by Acclaim's resident pianist. His festive holiday music not only captivated the audience, but it also inspired them to join in and sing along to the Christmas carol selections. Luncheon attendees appreciated the work and thoughtfulness of Club members who planned this fun event. The sing-along was a special ending to the WWC members' holiday celebration, filled with friendship, music, and festive spirit.

Fellowship House

Five Club members visited Fellowship House on November 30 to join its senior residents for their annual Trim-A-Tree holiday activity.  Members enjoyed helping the residents decorate a Christmas tree, sing Christmas carols, and partake in  holiday refreshments.  It was a special day of fun for the Club's Outreach Community Service Program.

Boxes of Basics

Sarah Tyndall, the Founder & Executive Director of the non-profit company Boxes of Basics was the speaker for our October 16, 2023, General Meeting.  She spoke enthusiastically about the significant need for collecting quality new and gently used clothing from the community for children who don’t have decent clothing to wear to school, religious services and recreation activities.  Ms. Tyndall asked our club members for their help to, “Give the gift of a seasonal wardrobe to local children in need.” She explained their program collects, sorts and distributes clothing from newborns to age 14 that are presented neatly folded and wrapped in a box like gifts.  Boxes of Basics doesn’t accept used underwear, shoes and socks; they must be new items.  Members learned this program is now so large that purchasing a warehouse was necessary to carry out its mission efficiently.

Supporting this charitable program is a 2023-4 budgeted Club project, and four members visited its warehouse on November 28 to learn how WWC members could assist this program.  They learned volunteers are needed to prepare the individualized boxes with five outfits for each child. When the clothing selections are complete, the box is marked for delivery by gender, age and location for delivery.  What the Club members can do is to identify locations for clothing donation boxes beginning in January, and donate new items: clothing and especially new socks, underwear and shoes. Monetary contributions are also accepted on a one-time basis or by becoming a GEM member who gives every month.  Please contact a Club member for more information about participating.

BUNCO

The Club held its third annual BUNCO Fundraiser on November 13 at Acclaim.  We thank the members and guests who attended and made our fundraiser a great success. Twenty-five members played and we had five winners for Most Buncos, Last Bunco, Most Wins, Most Losses, and Middle of the Road. They received gift cards that the club had received as donations. In addition to the prizes, each participant went home with a bottle of scented soap from Bath and Body Works.

A big thank you to our president, the Civic Engagement chair, and our treasurer organizing this fundraise.  Thanks also to those who helped set up the tables at Acclaim.
